Week of September 18

ENJOY THESE HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR WEEK!

We have been doing yoga this week as a way to focus our bodies and brains, and to get ready to learn.

We flow through several poses, including 'mountain', 'tree', 'downward dog', 'flamingo', 'child's pose' and 'lotus'.

We are sentence builders! We have been talking about how letters make up words and words make up sentences. In order for a sentence to sound right, or make sense, the words have to be in a specific order.

I scrambled up some words and my sentence builders helped me put them in the correct order.

123 Station, Numeral Dice Toss: "I can see and tell how many dots"

We are also book collectors. This week, children added the book "I See' to their book baskets.

Theme activity, children worked on building sentences.

We started FUNdations this week. This is a phonics curriculum that teaches letter names and sounds; sight words; and handwriting. This is a large soundcard and the picture serves to remind children what sound a letter represents. "T-top-'t'".

We learned how to write lowercase 't' "the kindergarten way".

We were excited to write on the FUNdations writing grid.

We talked about 'sitting like a writer': belly up to the table, sitting straight up with feet in front.

We are word collectors. This year we will learn many sight words, which we will be able to read and write quickly. These words will be posted on the Word Wall.

'I' and 'am' were the first sight words we learned and we have been reading books that feature these words.

We are learning about 'math habits of mind and interaction'. Private Reasoning Time allows us to think about a math question/problem/tool.

We can 'Justify Why', which means we explain our math thinking.

Working with ten frames.

We matched numerals to corresponding ten frames...

...and justified why...

...my mathematicians did a great job explaining and justifying their thinking!

...proud mathematician sharing her math thinking.

We started Writers Workshop this week, as well. The first step in writing is thinking of a topic. The core idea of our first lesson was that writers write to teach what they know about. We think of a topic, imagine it, and then draw and write about it. I am so proud of these Super Writers! Every student went for it and came up with thoughtful topics to draw and write about.

"My backyard"

"Halloween"

"Doing cartwheels"

"Showing people how to cut"

We had a fantastic week in kindergarten!!
