Week of January 1 and January 8

Happy New Year! I hope you have found a special place in your home to hang our monthly calendars.

Beginning sound match.

Sight word reading and writing practice.

Our new work in FUNdations is 'tapping'. We can use tapping as a reading and writing strategy. Tapping helps us to hear each sound in a word, then we blend the sounds together.

We incorporate 'tapping' practice throughout the day, including part of our morning meeting work.

This week, we also practiced writing upper case letters. In many cases, this serves as a review for kindergarten children. But since practice makes permanent, it is a great skill to work on.

We were fortunate to have a guest from The Montshire Museum visit CCS. She set up a planetarium and we ventured inside to learn about the night sky.

We discussed stars, constellations, the moon, planets and had the opportunity to view them inside the planetarium.

During Guided Reading Groups we are focusing on these reading strategies.

We point to each word as we read in order to track the words. We don't want to skip a word or add words that aren't on the page.

Guided Reading gives us opportunities to learn and practice new sight words.

We are well into our Writer's Workshop unit on writing true stories. I am super proud of the work my kindergarten writers are doing.

It feels awesome to be able to go back and read our own writing!

Math Game: Foxes and Dens. The big math idea in this game is using the 'counting on' strategy.

Some children are writing number sentences to match.
